I want to become a freelancer

How to become a self-employed freelancer

Eight steps from your first conversation to meeting a client. We are happy to help you along the way.

  1. 1

    Introductory meeting

    Plan a conversation

Together we schedule a non-binding conversation at our office. We are happy to look at your situation and wishes, so that everything is set up as well as possible for a good start of your own business.

  2. 2

    Chamber of Commerce

    Apply for a KvK number

The first step is to make an appointment at the Chamber of Commerce (KvK) to apply for a KvK number. First discuss with an adviser or accountant which legal form suits you best.

Registration involves a one-off fee; you can find the current rate at kvk.nl. With a KvK number you can start invoicing.

  3. 3

    Tax Authority

    VAT identification number

As soon as you have registered as a sole proprietorship at the KvK, you will receive a letter within two weeks. It contains your turnover tax number and your VAT identification number. You put these numbers on invoices, business cards, website and other communication to customers and suppliers.

The first step is done. You are now officially a freelancer. Congratulations!

  4. 4

    Business and private kept separate

    Open a bank account

When you start as a freelancer, you need a bank account number. A business account is not mandatory, but you also want to keep private and business separate, don’t you? That is why we do advise opening a business account.

  5. 5

    Liability and disability insurance

    Take out insurance

As a freelancer you are not obliged to insure yourself. But we advise you to take out business liability insurance (AVB). A small mistake can lead to a large damages claim.

To take out this insurance you must be registered at the KvK. Based on your registration, business liability insurance (AVB) can be arranged. The premium depends on your job description. For this you need the following details:

    • Name and address details
    • KvK registration
    • Proof of identity
    • Job description / activities
    • Bank account number

But also think of disability insurance or a safety net, for when your income drops away in case of incapacity for work.

  6. 6

    WorkForce-NL Academy

    Trade-specific certificates

To deliver good quality, you know better than anyone that you need the right skills and technical knowledge. For this you sometimes have to obtain trade-specific certificates. As a freelancer, think for example of the VCA-VOL certificate. Through our WorkForce-NL Academy we can help you obtain the right certificate.

  7. 7

    Invest in your business

    Business essentials

As a tradesperson you radiate professionalism. That is why, as a freelancer, you like to invest in good tools, comfortable work clothing/PPE and a spacious car/van that takes you from A to B. Don’t go for the cheapest, but dare to invest in your own business for the long term.

  8. 8

    With your new client

    Introductory meeting

During an introductory meeting with a potential new client, you can get a feel for the company and see whether you can mean something to each other.
